What is Therapy?

Counseling or Therapy (used interchangeably) is meant for people to identify, process and work through things that may be challenging to do alone. There are many different reasons for someone to decide to see a counselor, but the important thing to remember, is that deciding to see a counselor should be viewed as a sign of strength. This is the first step to your journey of growth and discovery.

What will happen when I first contact Ace Counseling?

Each client will be able to schedule a free initial phone or video consultation in order to make sure we are a good fit for each other. We make this convenient by allowing you to schedule this consultation directly online, calling, or emailing us. This consultation will also include time for any questions the client may have before committing to an appointment. We at Ace Counseling want to make sure our clients feel confident that they have found a therapist that fits their personality, goals and overall vibe. If we or the client feel there may be a better fit, we would be happy to offer referrals.

What is the benefit of therapy?

There are a number of benefits when it comes to seeing a therapist. A therapist can provide problem solving tools, coping skills, and a safe place to talk about things that may be too difficult to talk about with your friends and family. It is a neutral person that can hear your struggles, and provide some direction in how to confront them. Therapy does not just provide “advice,” rather it provides you with the insight and skills to overcome obstacles you may face going forward in life.

Why do people go to therapy and how do I know if I need it?

Life throws us all sorts of obstacles that test us in ways we have never been tested before. There comes a time you may realize this has become too much to handle it on your own. Maybe you want to learn how to cope with things that you have struggled to move on from (past relationships, career changes, childhood trauma, life transitions). There are many different reasons someone may reach out to come to therapy, the important thing to remember is reaching out should be viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness.

I’ve never been to therapy, what is the process like?

Each individual’s journey in therapy is different and unique. The idea of therapy is to start with an initial assessment. This covers different areas of your life such as biological, psychological and social areas. It is helpful to get the whole picture of someone’s life in order to cover the basis. The next step is to develop treatment goals. The client and therapist will work together to identify goals to be achieved or worked on throughout therapy. After that, the sessions are guided by the treatment goals in order to reach them. These goals can change throughout the process of therapy and the client and therapist will work together to adapt.
