Procrastination — Video

Procrastination — Transcription

Hi, everyone! I wanted to kick off our first Talk It Out Tuesday and this is where you guys are gonna send me different messages on coping skills, tips that you’re looking for, mental health advice, things like that. And I’m going to hopefully provide you with some of these resources and tips to help you out. So the first one that I got was talking about wasting time doing unimportant tasks – basically to avoid bigger tasks that need to be done, that maybe you’re dreading a little bit more. So in a nutshell procrastination, which I’m sure we all have experienced with, especially right now. So with this one, I do want to start off with something that Mark Twain had said. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the phrase, “eat the frog”. So basically what he says is if you eat a live frog in the morning, it’s the worst thing that will happen to you throughout that day.

So what he’s trying to say is if you do the thing that you’re dreading the most first, then the rest of your day will be easier and you’ll be able to stay on task cause they’re smaller and more manageable tasks. So that’s my first tip would be to get that thing that you really don’t want to do done first. And then the rest of your day is going to look a little bit brighter. The second thing in a way to help with this is called the Pomodoro Technique that I really love using for myself. And I also offer it to all my teenagers that I work with, their parents and adults – pretty much anyone. Basically what you do is (i) you work uninterrupted for 25 minutes, then you (ii) have a 5 minute break and then you (iii) do another 25 minutes, another 5 minute break and then a final 25 minutes. And then you get a 30 minute break.

So you’re breaking up your time doing this task. The 25 minutes doesn’t feel that long. Then you get a break to kind of check your phone or get a snack or whatnot. It really breaks it up and it helps you to stay on task those 25 minutes. And you’d be surprised on how much work you can actually get done in 25 minutes of uninterrupted work. So I use an app called PomoDoneApp it’s P O M O D O N E. You can search it in the app store and I’ll also put a link. That’s my favorite one, but there’s multiple apps that you can use for yourself.

So hopefully that was helpful

And feel free to private message me on my Facebook or Instagram with what you want to hear in terms of coping skills different techniques, things like that. And I will see you next Tuesday for our next Talk It Out Tuesday. Thank you!
